広陵の家
奈良県広陵町に昭和26年に建立された2階建ての母屋の庭に約15坪の小さな平屋のハナレを増築した。この家を生家とするご主人と奥さんが週末にゆっくりと過ごす為の場所である。
建物の配置や間取り等の基本構想は固まっており、そのコンセプトを壊さぬよう、細かな納まりや素材を吟味しながら具体的に計画案を組み立てていった。
この家の中心は母屋とハナレの間にある「庭」である。長年に渡り大切に育てられてきた木々や草花を出来る限り伐採する事無く建物の配置が決められている。それ故必然的に生まれた雁行する壁面が小さな屋内空間に面積以上の奥行きをもたらしている。更に外壁の凹凸により庭が緩やかに区画され、小さなアルコーブのような魅力的な場所が、あちらこちらに生まれた。そこにかつて母屋の屋根に据え付けられていた瓦や石等が配置され、場所毎にキャラクターが作られている。
母屋の空間構成をみると、庭から深い軒下、土間、縁側を介して座敷へと内外を重層的に繋いでいる。同様にハナレもまた庭から回廊や土間を介して居室へと段階的に内外を繋いでいる。母屋とハナレの間には何重ものフィルターがかけられお互いに複雑な見え方をしている。
土間や回廊は庭と母屋との関係を調整するだけでは無く、空気環境を調整する機能や居住空間を拡張する機能も持っている。小さな土間は、そこに設置された薪ストーブの熱を蓄熱する機能を持っている。同時に通りに対して、にじり口のような魅力的な開口をもっており、近隣の方が立ち寄り世間話をするような隠れ家的場所にもなっている。
ギャラリーでもある回廊は束立により地面から持ち上げられた床下から冷気を取り入れる役割を担っている。夏になると冷たい空気は光庭の上部に設けられた換気窓に向かって居室内に引っ張られる。
人工的な空調機器を一切利用せず、自然の力だけで快適な空気環境を作り出していると同時にただ単に住む以外の機能がそこに隠されている。 光庭に置かれた二重桝型手水鉢をはじめ、庭石、照明器具、家具、絵、ギャラリーに置かれた美術品に至るまで、ご主人により考え抜かれて選定されており、それらが空間の質を何倍にも高めている。(吉村理)
